Effects of Korean Ginseng on Metabolism of Amino Acid in Rats

Abstract
In order to see what effects the ginseng extract will bring upon the utilization and oxidation of amino acid in the body, a methanol extract of the roats of dried ginseng was prepared. The extract was administered to rats in single daily dose of 5 mg in 0..5 ml of saline solution per body weight of 100gm for 4 days. The control group was injected with 0.5 ml of saline. The two groups were subdivided into the feeding and the starving (for 2~ hours). After one hour following the final administration of ginseng extract and saline respectively, all animals were injected with 4 ,uC of amino acid mixed-i¢¥C with 20 nag of L-alanine, per body weight of 100 gm.
From immediate after the amino acid was given the amount of COz in the exhalation vas measured for. 3 hours. At the end of this test the effects of ginseng was studied on the utilization of amino acid in the biosynthesis of protein and total lipid in liv~:r and serum, and glycogen in liver.
The incorporation rate of amino acid- mixed-14C into protein ~v~is increased with the administration of ginseng, especially in fasting state.
The conversion rate of amino acid to total lipid in livers and serum was exhibited a little increase in the feeding group administered with ginseng, but showed decrease in fasting state.
A sharp decrease was noted in liver glycogen in starving control group and its content and the conversion rate of amino acid to glycogen was remained with little change even if ginseng vas administered
Ginseng gave no remarkable effect on the oxidation of amino acid in the body under feeding state but decreased it under starvation.
From the above observations, it is suggested that the extract of Korean ginseng root cause an enhancement of incorporation cf amino acids into the protein synthesis in starvated condition but also it involves in some way on the regulation of amino acid metabolism.
